📣 LISTEN IN!

Does your child have dyslexia? There is a strong correlation between students with dyslexia and struggles in mathematics. A lot of people believe that dyslexia is only a language-based issue, but we know from Dr. David Geary that about 50% of those with dyslexia also struggle with mathematics. Dyslexia definitions have constantly changed over the years, but in 1988 the definition of dyslexia included mathematics as an issue. (Mathematics for Dyslexics and Dyscalculics) Over time, we’ve separated dyslexia from math struggles, but the truth is certain processes involved in math learning are affected by dyslexia.

The processes needed for mathematics includes:

  • Language and Verbal retrieval skills
  • Working Memory skills
  • Speed of working
  • Executive Function skills
  • Visual-spatial skills

If you’re interested in learning more about how dyslexia affects math and the differences between dyslexia and dyscalculia, watch this 52-minute video with our CEO Adrianne. Jackson, one of our students here at MFM, exclaimed “I think I sound like a mathematician now!” when he was able to articulate a math problem with his specialist, Cassie. He is becoming more confident in his math abilities and enthusiastic about learning. He recently learned how to use double facts to solve near-doubles addition problems, for example using 6+6=12 to solve 6+7=13.

🌟You are a SUPERSTAR, Jackson, and we are so proud of you!
